At the time of Carnival in Slovenia we can find many traditional characers. One of the most traditional carnival groups Laufarija takes place in Cerkno. The Laufar’s family consists of 25 figures that all (except one) carry wooden masks called larfe. The main character “Pust” is dressed in costume covered with moss, personifies winter and is guilty for all the mistakes and awkwardness that has happened in the past year.
The most popular carnival character in Drežnica are Ta lepi in Ta Grdi (The Pretty ones and The Ugly ones), where unmarried boys participate a walk wearing wooden masks, carved by the boys themselves. The Ugly Ones are wearing a unique costume with rams fur, horns and big loud cow bells. The ugly ones who look very scary, chase children and sprinkle them with ashes. The Pretty Ones visit every house in the village wishing the locals all the best by dancing and by playing music.
Very popular carnival every year takes place in Cerknica. At that time the authority in town is overtaken by “butalci” in coalition with witches who fly from Slivnica Mountain.
